Highland Cares About Medical Care

We offer peace of mind by providing an around the clock, 7 days a week, full staff of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and support staff on each floor. We deliver care that is both personalized and appropriate; our physicians, nurses, and support staff establish warm relationships with residents and their families to treat each resident as an individual. We have on-site expertise, so our residents are often able to avoid the disruption and inconvenience of being discharged to the hospital or an outpatient facility for treatment. Some of our specialties include:

  • Wound Care—our specialized staff is supervised by a board-certified surgeon.
  • Tracheostomy and Related Care
  • Intravenous Therapies—our RNs and LPNs are IV-certified, providing them with the expertise to administer
    –TPN (Total Parenteral Nutrition)
    –PPN (Peripheral Parenteral Nutrition)
  • Pain Management—for residents with cancer and other physically debilitating conditions.

And our residents value the convenience of the in-house services of a dentist, optometrist, and podiatrist.

Highland Cares About Rehabilitation

Our goal is for residents to regain the maximum degree of independence in Activities of Daily Living—including feeding, dressing, grooming, and ambulation. Our licensed and certified Physical and Occupational Therapists, Aides, and support staff apply state-of-the-art techniques to individualized rehabilitation programs. We are highly regarded for integrating the use of language and culture with residents' physical potential, to stimulate and motivate them to achieve measurably successful results. And, for more than 10 years, we have been sharing our expertise—as a clinical training site for Rehab Therapy students.

We provide a full range of both long-term and short-term rehabilitation programs and services, including:

  • Physical and Occupational Therapy
  • Speech Therapy, Speech Pathology, and Audiology
  • Transitions to the community—by helping to coordinate residents' needs for home care attendants, nurses, and any related adaptive devices or medical equipment.

Highland Cares About Our Residents' Cares

Our Residents' Council and staff regularly review opportunities to improve the quality of our services. Our Social Service staff is always available to our residents and their families. Whether it's assistance with shopping for something special, arranging transportation for family members to visit a resident, running a weekly "rap" session, escorting residents to the local beauty parlor, or making the transition to or from Highland Care easier, the door is always open.

Highland Cares About Resident Nutrition

Our Registered Dieticians and Certified Food Service Staff closely coordinate resident diets with our healthcare professionals and residents' families to focus on proper nutrition. We invest significant time and effort to create an optimal dining atmosphere by providing our residents with a variety of "palate-pleasing" menus. We emphasize this because we find that food offers our residents their best source for nutrition—in contrast with a reliance on liquid dietary supplements. Our Residents' Council helps our Director of Food Service tailor menus to reflect residents' special needs, as well as their seasonal and ethnic food preferences—our summer barbecues are a great example of this joint effort to make meals more fun!

Highland Cares About Our Resident's Quality of Life

We are innovators in Therapeutic Recreation Programs—reaching out individually to involve each resident in a wealth of activities—keeping them active and content. Here is a sample:

  • Intergenerational Activities Program—Our residents and approximately 50 early childhood students from Our Saviour Lutheran Pre-School of Jamaica have created their own "community". With a communal Thanksgiving Dinner, Drama Club, and Arts & Crafts program, you understand our pride that a consultant to the New York City Department of Health has recognized:
"This is the only program of its kind in the entire City of New York."
  • Trips—Our residents go shopping, to ball games, the theater, movies, local restaurants, museums, and more.
  • "Learn New Skills" Program—for individualized piano and crafts instruction.
  • Adult Education—Our residents choose the topics: Science, History, Women in Literature, and Mythology, to name a few.
  • Special Events—Our new "Senior Prom" Program—in conjunction with two local High Schools—came from our affiliation with the New York City Board of Education LEARN Program. Ethnic Festivals, the Staff/Resident Olympics, Mother's Day, Father's Day and Holiday Celebrations (we even provide the gifts!), and Birthday parties all add to the fun.
  • Pen Pals Club (complete with a visit to our "correspondent facility" in Brooklyn), a resident-produced newsletter—and more!

Our residents don't live in our facility—we work in their home!
